Dr. Heyler Answers Your Eyecare Questions

I have an infant, a toddler, and a teenager; should my kids be wearing sunglasses?

Definitly! Childhhood is a very crucial time in development and appropriate measures need to be taken to protect childrens eyes early in their lives. UV protection is the most crucial before a child reaches 18-20 years old. The lens of the eye is a natural absorber of blue light and UV rays, only after around the age of 20. Up until this age, the lens allows UV or blue light into the eye. This is why it is so important for young children to wear sunglasses because we get 80% of our harmful UV exposure before the age of 18-20. However, this doesn't mean that adults are off the hook! They still need to protect their eyes with proper sunglasses as well. Even though the lens may prevent the UV light from reaching the retina in adults, without proper protection it can still damage the front of the eye as well as the lens itself.
